Mamluke Tomb

Jerusalem's crucial importance led some Mamlukes to move there in their declining years in order to die and be buried in the city. This detail from the mausoleum of a Mamluke woman shows unusual stone decorations Islam forbids the representation of human or animal images. The geometric design was probably copied from art work executed in wood.
