During the reign of his father (Baldwin I, 1100-1118), the Crusader kingdom
expanded into large areas of new territory.
Baldwin II worked to strengthen the kingdom internally. He made considerable efforts to improve the state of Jerusalem - he canceled the tolls levied on merchants at the city gates in order to encourage trade.
The kingdom's military forces were strengthened during his reign by the founding of the Hospitaller and Templar Orders. Baldwin was buried in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. |
