The Church of the Redeemer

"To the left of the market (Arabic: suq, Hebrew: shuq) are the Latin silversmiths, shops. At the end of these shops there is a monastery, called Great St. Mary's (Santa Maria Grande), and behind that is another, of the black monks, called Latin St. Mary's (Santa Maria Latina)."

The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer built here in the early twentieth century stands on the ruins of the Crusader church of Santa Maria Latina. The northern portal of the Crusader church is incorporated in the modern church. Its principal decorations depict the seasons, illustrated by agricultural activities.

Next to the church, on its southern side, there now stands a Lutheran school which is part of the Crusader cloisters; This used to adjoin the church of Santa Maria Latina. To the west of the church is the Muristan complex, where a hospital belonging to the Knights of St. John (the Hospitallers) used to stand.

The complex now consists of two intersecting markets, constructed in the early twentieth century by the Greek Orthodox church. Its construction obliterated the remains of another church mentioned in the pilgrim's description - Santa Maria Grande.

It is highly recommended to climb up the tower of the Church of the Redeemer -
there is a panoramic view of the Old City and its surroundings from the top.
